Anxiously watching the news. Checking the weather app every ten minutes. Looking at Facebook statuses to see if your friends in other cities and states have spotted the storm yet. The whole state is on lockdown and everything is cancelled already. Peaking out the window to see if this will be a real Snowmagedon this year or will it be a repeat of 2015 when not one flake fell from the sky.
Some areas of the East coast are seeing the real deal of this storm. It is not just snow, it is snow, and wind, and people just got their power back, and slush, and discovering the difference between essential employees report to work vs non-essential employees can have the day off (huh?). If you are a student or a “non-essential” employee (someone please leave a comment on how exactly that is determined because I don’t get it) and have the day off today, here are some things you can do to add a sprinkle to your adult’ing life.
- Wash your clothes -> Do not wait until the weekend. The time is now. By the time the weekend comes you will be stir crazy, and you will want to get out before the next wave of storms hit. It is already projected that many will get more snow or rain. Either way, there is no reason to put off washing your clothes.
- Do not sleep all day -> There is no such thing as catching up on sleep. Once the time has passed it has passed. What you can do is get the task out of the way that may prevent you from going to sleep at reasonable times. That way you can get better sleep throughout the rest of the week and your body will benefit more from a lifestyle change than the sleep loop of sleeping all day today then two hours the rest of the week.
- Shovel some -> There is much caution with this one. The type of snow that many of us received is labeled “heart attack snow”. This means the snow is so dense that even a healthy person can suffer a heart attack from over working themselves trying to clear it all. Shovel some of the snow. Take breaks. Go back out and shovel some more. The snow is falling fast and the plows are working overtime. Leaving all of the snow will not work either because when it is time to go back to work and school you will still be stuck. If you are lucky enough that you do not have to shovel, help someone else out. Brush off a car or two.
- Catch up on task you leave for the weekend -> Again, this weekend may be your time to finally get out of the house.
- Have fun -> Talking with friends yesterday, and it was noted how when we have scheduled time off we jam pack it with activities, but let a snow day happen and we don’t know what to do with ourselves. Have fun today. Catch up with friends. Laugh more than usual. Let today be a light hearted day. Get things done, but let a smile or two be on that list as well. Try not to complain so much about the snow because it’s not going anywhere today.
For my youth out there, take a walk into adult snow days. For my adults, take a step back to your younger self on snow days. Balance and happy adult’ing.
